We get together at Homosassa, Lecanto and Inverness, in Citrus County, Florida on 3 different days for carving and learning. A business meeting is held once a month with a ‘show & tell’ at the end. At our carving sessions we joke, laugh, give and receive serious lessons about our unique interest in carving wood. From the brand new beginner who doesn’t have a clue where to start, to the mega-year experienced carver, we all learn different aspects of carving from each other. If you have ever considered joining an optimist club, consider joining our group for a lesson or two in whittling a square block of wood into a cowboy or a bird.
The Club was officially created on September 26, 1994, with 10 carvers. By-laws were written and officially approved on November 4, 1994. Officers were elected and the Club was on its way with 18 members at the second meeting.
Our monthly business meetings usually end with a “Show & Tell” session. Carvers are encouraged to show their new works and discuss any problems or new methods used which may be helpful to other carvers. We have periodic demonstrations and lectures explaining some interesting aspect of carving or new techniques.
Our mission is to promote carving in our community and to assist new carvers who wish to try different types of carving – “In The Round, Chip Carving, Wood Burning, Bark Carving, Cane carving, Birds, Fish, …” – and hope that we can be a part of the joy they find in turning “that plain ole’ piece or chunk of wood into something beautiful.”
Visitors are always welcome to our carving sessions and club meetings, so just check the schedule posted to the right for a time and place most convenient to stop by and “Check us out”!
Club members may take advantage of our library with numerous books, patterns, reference lists and catalogs that may be checked out, at the East Citrus Community Center. A copy machine is also available there. At all of the carving sessions, helpful assistance is provided by our many experienced woodcarvers – we just love to help new carvers get started!
The Club also provides carving classes during the year at nominal cost (many times free) for those who wish to improve their carving skills.
The Nature Coast Carving Club is active in the community. We have woodcarving displays in libraries and encourage our members to submit entries in the Citrus County Fair and the Florida State Fair. We have a large permanent display at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. We also donate money to the Lakes Region Library for the purchase of new woodcarving books and videos and furnish a “wish list” of books which we feel would supplement those purchased in the past. We also participate in projects just as “Lean on Me” where we provided carved canes or plaques to military veterans throughout our community.
To join the club, fill out a Membership Application and bring it to one of the Carving Sessions or Monthly Meeting. The cost is only $10.00 per year, discounted for family memberships.Starting January 1, 2016 the yearly membership dues will go up to $15.00 and $ 20.00 for families.
